What the categories mean

CME Group reports gold held in each COMEX-approved depository every business day. Registered gold has a warehouse warrant and can be delivered against a COMEX gold futures contract. Eligible gold meets the exchange's standards for bar size, purity and approved refiners, but has no warrant, so it's simply stored. Owners can move metal between the two categories with paperwork, or withdraw it from the vaults.

The standard COMEX gold contract (GC) is 100 troy ounces, and deliveries are usually made with 100-ounce or 1-kilogram bars. That's why gold delivery counts look large in contracts but smaller in ounces than silver: 1,000 gold contracts are 100,000 ounces, while 1,000 silver contracts are 5 million ounces.

How gold differs from silver at COMEX

Gold inventory is measured in millions of ounces, silver in hundreds of millions, because silver costs far less per ounce. Gold's registered share of the total is also usually higher than silver's. In dollar terms, though, the gold stock is much bigger: 23.48M oz of gold at about $4,160.70 an ounce is worth roughly five times the silver stock.

Large bank vaults hold most registered gold, and gold also moves between COMEX and the London market, where 400-ounce bars are the standard. Flows between New York and London can shift COMEX stocks quickly, for example when the price difference between the two markets widens. A big move in the numbers is worth noticing, but it doesn't by itself tell you why it happened.

Reading the numbers carefully

Our gold figures come from aggregators that round to the nearest 10,000 ounces, so small daily changes can be rounding. Dates can also differ between the inventory figure and the delivery figure, and we label each one. We describe what the data shows and don't forecast what it means for prices.
